Bringing Camel Spring's History to Life for Independent Travelers

The Challenge

Camel Spring in Xining draws a steady stream of independent travelers, many of them cultural tourists eager to understand the site's connection to the Salar people's migration history and local legend. But like most heritage sites, Camel Spring faces a familiar staffing gap: on-site guides aren't always available, especially during off-peak hours or for visitors arriving outside scheduled tour times. Static signage can only go so far — a placard might name a date or a figure, but it can't carry the layered stories, oral traditions, and historical context that make a site meaningful. For self-guided visitors, that often means missing the "why" behind what they're looking at.

The Solution

In 2024, YingMi partnered with the site to deploy its M7 self-service audio guide devices. Rather than requiring a scheduled tour or a live docent, the system lets visitors check out a device at the entrance and explore entirely at their own pace. Each stop along the route is mapped to on-demand narration, so travelers can linger at points of interest, skip ahead, or revisit a story as they choose — all without waiting on a group schedule.

The Visitor Experience

For someone arriving alone or in a small group, the experience shifts from "reading a sign" to "hearing a story." At each marked location, the device delivers narration covering the site's origin, its role in local heritage, and the folklore tied to Camel Spring itself — content that would otherwise require a trained guide to convey. Because the devices are self-service, there's no need to coordinate with staff availability or wait for the next scheduled tour; visitors simply pick up a unit and start exploring whenever they arrive.

The Outcome

By replacing a guide-dependent model with self-service audio narration, Camel Spring extended meaningful interpretive content to independent travelers throughout the day, not just during staffed hours. Visitors gained the flexibility of self-paced exploration without losing the depth of storytelling that static signage alone couldn't provide — closing the gap between "seeing a site" and truly understanding it.
